University of York's Central Hall Musical Society will be performing "Sunshine on Leith" at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre 23 -25th February 2023.

We are Central Hall Musical Society, the University of York’s leading musical theatre society. Our society provides opportunity to students to express themselves creatively through the arts, whether that is in full scale musicals, showcases, or cabaret style soirees. Each academic year we put on 3 full musicals at theatres across the city, including our largest show of the year, which takes place 23rd-25th February at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre.

This year we are doing Sunshine on Leith, a tale all about love for family, friends, romantic partners and love for our homes. It is the tale of one tight-knit family, and the three couples bound to it, as they experience the joys and heartache that punctuate all relationships.

Childhood friends Ally and Davy return home to Edinburgh after serving in the army and try to adapt to a return to civilian life. Davy’s sister Liz, who works as a Nurse for the NHS and is also Ally’s long-term partner, tries to cope with increasing budget cuts and underfunding, with the assistance of colleague and close friend Yvonne. Meanwhile, Davy and Liz’s parents, Jean and Rab must reckon with an unwelcome return from a face from the past.

Secrets will be revealed, relationships will be made and lost and broken hearts will be mended once more. And they will do it all while singing to the heartfelt music of The Proclaimers, of “I Would Walk (500 Miles)” fame.

People should come and see the show because Sunshine on Leith is not a typical jukebox musical. The storyline does a lot of justice to the songs of The Proclaimers, intertwining them within everyday scenes at the pub, within the family home and the workplace. All the themes of the show are really relevant to society nowadays, with a focus on love, the changing meanings of love, and the importance of those close to you.
