What would happen if you gave archaeologists with a passion for Viking history their very own education TV channel?  That’s what schools around the world will find out from Monday 6 to Friday 10 February, when the team at the JORVIK Viking Centre hosts the third annual Schools Week!

What would happen if you gave archaeologists with a passion for Viking history their very own education TV channel?  That’s what schools around the world will find out from Monday 6 to Friday 10 February, when the team at the JORVIK Viking Centre hosts the third annual Schools Week!

The event is free for schools to join as part of JORVIK Viking Festival and its digital twin, That JORVIK Viking Thing.  Every day during the week, experts from JORVIK Viking Centre will host livestreams covering different topics.  The live events are designed to encourage critical thinking, and are supported by a host of worksheets to provide primary-age children (especially Key Stage 2) with plenty of activities to keep their minds focused on Norse history throughout the week.

“Schools Week is a fantastic extension to JORVIK Viking Festival, offering educators in schools and at home access to a wide range of resources themed around Viking history.  It is free to join; we just ask for people to register so they can be sent links to the relevant resources, and it is available for viewers anywhere in the world,” comments Interpretation Manager for The JORVIK Group, Frances Bennett.  “We’ve had participants as far away as Australia for previous events, and fantastic feedback, so we’d urge as many teachers and home educators as possible to sign up and share this event with anyone else who might be interested.”

Schools Week is part of JORVIK Viking Centre’s wider educational programme, which includes visits to JORVIK Viking Centre itself in the heart of York, on the site of the exciting archaeological dig which revealed beautifully-preserved remains of Viking homes and backyards in the Coppergate area of York.  Virtual Outreach sessions – online sessions where a Viking talks to children live in their classroom – are also hugely popular amongst schools for which a trip to York isn’t possible.

Although the livestreams run from 6 – 10 February, the content – including the recorded livestreams and extra video content - remains available online for the rest of February, catering for any schools who might be on holiday during the week, or who want to fit it into their curriculum a little later in the month.  Schools Week is followed from 11 – 19 February by JORVIK Viking Festival itself, which takes place across the city of York, including a Viking Strongman Competition, best beard contest (home-made beards are also welcome!) and a march featuring hundreds of Vikings through the city streets.
