Theatre@41 announces packed new programme for Autumn/Winter

Theatre@41 is gearing up for a superb Autumn/Winter season one year on from throwing its doors open post-pandemic.

Theatre@41 is gearing up for a superb Autumn/Winter season one year on from throwing its doors open post-pandemic. And building on that spectacular year of theatre, York’s best black box studio is proving to be the venue of choice for a superb mix of local and national companies and artists. A new partnership with York’s Burning Duck Comedy has led to bookings including Colin Hoult (Netfilx’s After Life,) Helen Bauer (Ed Fest Fringe Best Newcomer Nominee, Live at the Apollo, star of ITV2, BBC3, Comedy Central and Radio 4) and Olga Koch (Mock the Week, Frankie Boyle’s New World Order and Ed Fest Fringe Best Newcomer Nominee) who returns to Theatre@41 after bringing her hit tour to the studio last year. Also coming back for more are the wonderful Dyad Productions (their I, Elizabeth was a sellout) with Christmas Gothic adapted by and starring Rebecca Vaughan; Sarah-Louise Young with her charming yet cheeky West End and Off-Broadway hit cabaret Julie Madly Deeply – a tribute to the legendary Julie Andrews (An Evening Without Kate Bush was also a sell-out); and Lloyd Parry with more gripping ghost stories by M R James (Lloyd sold out in January with his wonderfully atmospheric stories by candlelight). News of the Monkgate venue is obviously spreading as it welcomes five new well-known artists including the Olivier Award-winning actor Guy Masterson with his one-man adaptation of A Christmas Carol (“one of the best yet” BBC Radio). Seven popular local companies and performers have upcoming shows, with Matilda and The Sound of Music from Pick Me Up Theatre, the Tony Award-winning play Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike from York Settlement Community Players and evening concerts/gigs from York Musical Theatre Company, Jessa Liversidge and the barnstorming country and rock band The Rusty Pegs. Making his Theatre@41 debut is Spookologist and ghost-botherer Dorian Deathly (winner of the Visit York Tourism Awards 2022) who will get spines tingling over Halloween with A Night of Face-Melting Horror. The venue is also hosting the first Groves Community Cinema – a weekend of classic films old and new right on residents’ doorsteps when visitors will be invited to “pay what you feel”. This is thanks to an ARG Events and Festivals Grant in partnership with Make It York and the City of York Council. Theatre@41 is fast establishing itself as the City’s top Fringe-style venue and with the average ticket price at just £13 and a list of shows as varied as this, Monkgate is definitely the place to be.
