Tim Murgatroyd was brought up in Yorkshire. He read English at Hertford College, Oxford University and now lives with his family in York. He is the author of several novels of historical fiction, a poetry series, and a trilogy of dystopian novels.

Over the next few weeks Tim will be launching his new novel, THE ELECTRIC, recently released by Stairwell Books. There are three events spread through October, culminating in a gala performance of a silent classic, The Phantom of the Opera, at York City Screen.

Each event is very different, with a special focus on the glamorous, lost world of silent cinema.

Thursday 13 October 2022: Book launch at York Explore as part of the Big City Read festival

Enjoy an entertaining hour of readings, wine and discussions, with the assistance of award-winning poet, Ian Parks.

Wednesday 26th October 2022: Ghost Cinemas of York: Bringing silent cinemas back to life at Waterstones, York

Prepare for surprising facts and stories about the picture palaces that brought Hollywood glamour to a city recovering from war. You will receive a free guide to the ghost cinemas of York, which we will explore through images, music and movie clips. Dr Rob O'Connor will be leading this event in association with York Literature Festival.

Friday 28th October 2022: Gala Performance with live musical accompaniment of the silent classic: THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1925) at City Screen, York

Romance, horror and suspense meet outstanding live music accompaniment from Neil Brand, described as "one of the finest improvising piano accompanists in the world". The live show will be preceded by a short Q & A discussing music in the silent cinema and its impact on audiences. A BSL signer will be on hand. Get ready for the music of the night!
