Five pregnant ewes have been killed by dogs over the last two weeks.

A warning from police to dog owners to keep their pets on leads comes after five sheep have been killed in the last two weeks on a farm in Wigginton, all of which were pregnant and in the same field that has a public footpath along the perimeter.

Dogs off the lead not only cause stress to the animals but the killing of sheep has a great impact on the farming community financially. North Yorkshire Police say that it is still unknown whether the stress experienced by the sheep when being chased is the cause of the remaining 300 ewes to terminate their pregnancies.
