Archaeology Live: Delving into the past with York Archaeology 1 – 9 October 2022

Experts from York Archaeology and The JORVIK Group will be helping history enthusiasts around the world see how archaeology helps us to understand both the past and present with the return of Archaeology Live, a hybrid online and in-person festival taking place from 1 – 9 October 2022.

Experts from York Archaeology and The JORVIK Group will be helping history enthusiasts around the world see how archaeology helps us to understand both the past and present with the return of Archaeology Live, a hybrid online and in-person festival taking place from 1 – 9 October 2022.

“We’ve got a series of events and talks taking place in York and Nottingham during the week, plus a host of livestreamed lectures and presentations and a series of on-demand videos looking at lots of different aspects of the work of archaeologists,” comments event manager, Gareth Henry.  “Whether you are a professional archaeologist, an enthusiastic amateur, or a young person trying to find out about archaeology for the first time, we’ve got something that will entertain and enlighten – and most of our content is free of charge!”

Highlights of this year’s event include:

• Willow House Open Day (York) – a chance to see the pioneering work being conducted by archaeologists with members of the local community as part of the award-winning Archaeology on Prescription programme.  The event takes place in Walkmgate in York from 11.00am to 3pm on Saturday 1 October.
• Revisiting the Palaeolithic: a day-long conference highlighting 15 years of research in the East Midlands.  Takes place on Saturday 8 October from 9.30am. 
• Wonders of the Wolds, a digital event marking the launch of a new research strategy for the Yorkshire Wolds.  This exciting event, in collaboration with Historic England, will celebrate the landscape, history and archaeology of the Wolds via expert analysis and commentary, and will showcase community artwork inspired by heritage and local traditions.  Takes place on Wednesday 5 October at 7.00pm. 

The free video on-demand films include interviews with volunteers from York Archaeological Trust talking about exploring the Coppergate archives, trainee archaeologists at work on WeDig, a training dig in York, and a host of films created for school children as part of Schools Week.
