Contractual dispute over library funds for York

Wednesday, 21 February 2024 00:00

By Connie Shaw

Lid Dems set to hold a rally on Thursday 22 February to 'support our libraries'.

City of York Council says it is “confident” an agreement can be reached with York Explore after spending cuts were announced. The cuts include £600,000 worth of funds from York Explore for York’s libraries, despite a 15 year contract being signed with the organisation in 2019.

The Labour Council predicted a £11.4 million overspend forecast in September 2023 and is therefore legally obliged to balance the books.

Councillor Jo Coles says the council is “absolutely committed to honouring the contract that we have but we do want to change it”. This is despite York Explore’s CEO Jenny Layfield stating that “under the current contract, we do not intend to close any libraries”.

Lib Dem opposition have also launched a campaign called ‘support our libraries’, with a rally to be held tomorrow (Thursday 22 February) at 16.30pm outside the York Explore Library on Museum Street, prior to the budget meeting later that evening.
