A proper warm welcome now awaits visitors to Dringhouses Library. Work has started to replace the heating system with the library set to re-open on 16 March.

Average temperatures inside the library of only 10 degrees meant that Explore, the independent mutual organisation which runs York’s libraries and City Archive, decided to temporarily close the library in mid-February. Work has now started to replace the boiler, radiators and space heaters and should be completed in time for re-opening on Thursday 16 March.

Explore, like many community organisations, is facing a number of challenges due to current high energy prices with costs more than double what they were 12 months ago and is always on the look out for ways to increase income through business development, fundraising and donations.

Jenny Layfield, Chief Executive of Explore York Libraries and Archives said:

“I know how important Dringhouses Library is for the local community. So I’m delighted we’ve found a solution to the heating problems and can re-open this much-loved and well-used library. I want to thank everyone for their patience whilst we have been undertaking the necessary work.

Like other independent charitable organisations, Explore is always looking for ways to build our financial resilience and I am happy to talk to business or private donors who may feel able to help us and would like to become a supporter of Explore.”

Health and Safety Executive guidance states that the minimum temperature for working indoors in a library-type environment should be at least 16°C.

All items loaned by Dringhouses Library will be renewed automatically until the library re-opens on 16 March.

The nearest alternative library is Acomb Explore on Front Street. Regular library services and activities such as computer use, Under 5 story time and Lego Club may be enjoyed at Acomb or at any other Explore library.

Customers who have questions about the closure can email contact@exploreyork.org.uk or call Acomb Explore (01904) 552651
