The blaze happened at a flat just off Bishopgate Street on Friday evening at 4:54 pm.
Firefighters were alerted after a neighbour reported the sound of fire alarms going off, as well as the smell of smoke. Crews from both York and Acomb attended the scene.
As expected, the cause is thought to have been the fact that the food was left unattended.
