New "No Dig" garden to be opened in York

By Will Harris

The award-winning hotel Grays Court, The Bow Room and York Minster have created a new ‘no dig’ food garden for the local food banks as, well as the hotel.

Grays Court head gardener, Jules Fern, says that the garden will be as organic and as sustainable as possible, with no pesticides or herbicides being used. The scheme has been helped by the Brunswick Organic Nursery in Bishopthorpe providing vegetable seedlings, as well as the Beacon Alpaca Farm which provides manure.

Jules also says that the garden will be no dig so it can leave the micro-organisms that live in the soil undisturbed. Initial works on the programme are expected to be completed by Christmas with the first harvest expected in the spring.
