On Wednesday afternoon, The Queen's Baton Relay came to York ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Birmingham 2022 is staging the 16th official Queen’s Baton Relay – an epic journey across the Commonwealth, with The Queen’s Baton visiting all 72 nations and territories.
York's Batonbearers Zoe Barratt, William Kilgannon, Colin Lea and Max May completed their relay around part of the bar walls and around York Minster. The baton then travelled to Batonbearer Lucy Hadaway at York St John's Haxby Road campus, where 600 school children from 20 primary schools in York were able to see the baton up close.
Make It York's Managing Director, Sarah Loftus, completed her stint of the relay this morning in Hull before supporting fellow Batonbearers in York. Sarah Loftus said: "It has been a huge honour to carry the baton today and to share this experience with York's inspiring Batonbearers, as the relay continues its journey through England. It's been amazing to see our community experience the buzz of the Queen's Baton Relay and build up the excitement for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games"
Cllr Darryl Smalley, Executive Member for Culture, Leisure and Communities at City of York Council, said: “Welcoming the Queen’s Baton Relay to York in this, the Platinum Jubilee year and ahead of the Commonwealth Games, is an honour. Thank you to the Batonbearers who represented the city.
“The Baton has visited many hundreds of cities and towns across the world already. Seeing it being carried along our iconic city walls and around the Minster reminds us of our connection to the Commonwealth, so thank you to everyone involved.”
