The woman who founded the Yorkshire Air Museum has been made an MBE in the Queen’s Jubilee Birthday Honours for services to heritage. Rachel Semlyen had the idea almost 40 years ago of turning a derelict wartime site in Elvington into an air museum. The attraction is now visited by over 60,000 people a year.

Rachel said she was ‘extremely honoured’ and that ‘it is a huge tribute to the museum and all the amazing people who have helped to make it possible.’
