A new set of umbrellas have taken pride of place down Coppergate Walk with an extra fluttering feature inspired by jellyfish – the multicoloured Ribbon Brollywalk was installed this evening at York’s Coppergate Centre.

A new set of umbrellas have taken pride of place down Coppergate Walk with an extra fluttering feature inspired by jellyfish – the multicoloured Ribbon Brollywalk was installed at the end of last week at York’s Coppergate Centre.

With hanging umbrella displays now becoming a staple summer feature in cities up and down the country, the Coppergate team looked for something a little different to make York’s latest display stand out, and inspiration came from suspended ‘jellyfish’ at a carnival in Malta.  Each of the umbrellas has ribbons hanging from the canopy to create a display the flutters even more in the breeze.

“So far this year, we’ve had union flags for the Platinum Jubilee, rainbows, tennis balls for Wimbledon, and butterflies and tropical bird umbrellas making a colourful display above Coppergate Walk, but we wanted to end the summer with something a little different to make it extra-appealing for the Instagram fans sharing photos,” comments Jay Commins, who installs new umbrella displays every four weeks.  “The Ribbon Brollywalk harks back to our first ever umbrella display, with simple, plain coloured umbrellas but with hanging ribbons to really add movement and draw the eye.  I’m very much looking forward to hearing the reaction from visitors.”

The Coppergate Centre’s Brollywalk is a staple feature in the city’s summer calendar now, with thousands of photographs taken and shared by York’s residents and visitors alike.  It is the only umbrella display in the country that is changed and updated throughout the summer, encouraging people to come and see the new displays whenever they are in the city centre.

The Brollywalk is just one of the popular attractions in the Coppergate Centre which draw the crowds: JORVIK Viking Centre and The Hole in Wand wizard crazy golf have both enjoyed a busy summer.  Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience in York St Mary’s also recently announced its opening had been extended until the end of the Year.
