York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity have provided funding for the breast cancer specialist nurses to offer post-surgery bras to help patients who have been treated for breast cancer at York or Scarborough hospitals.

“Post surgical bras are not available through the NHS and for some patients, they are simply unaffordable,” commented Karen Quail one of the Trust’s specialist breast care nurses.  We felt we needed to help these patients during a stressful time.”

Post surgical bras are available through mainstream retailers, but in some cases these do not fit well. The specialist breast care nurses have a dedicated fitting room within the Magnolia Centre at York Hospital.  Patients can seek post-surgery advice and where needed, can now be given a post-mastectomy bra, fitted to them.

“The bras come in black, nude, and white but we’d like to be able to offer a wider choice of colours.  Patients dread going shopping for the bras, so this can help relieve that burden.”

Karen wants to make the project sustainable long term so has enlisted the help of the charity for additional support.

Becky White, Community Fundraiser, said “We are delighted to be able to support the post-mastectomy bra initiative and help patients going through a difficult time. York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity would love to hear from anyone who wishes to donate to allow the team to purchase more bras for future patients”.
