York City appoints first rabbi in 800 years

Thursday, 14 September 2023 00:00

By Zack Kear

The city of York has made history by welcoming York’s first rabbi in 800 years.

Rabbi Dr Elisheva Salamo was appointed earlier in the month by the York liberal jewish community.

The appointment is especially significant as Salamo is Yorks first resident rabbi since the expulsion of Jews from England in 1290.

As the Liberal Jewish community continues to grow in York, the time was right to appoint a figurehead to meet the spiritual and educational needs of the community.

The appointment aims to make York a friendly and inclusive home to any residents, students and visitors who identify as jewish.
