Friday, 26 April 2024 00:05

By Connie Shaw

The first ever Mayoral election for the York and North Yorkshire region is to take place on Thursday 2nd May next week.

The elected Mayor will bring more decision-making powers and millions of pounds of funding to the area as a result of the devolution deal made with the Westminster government in 2022. This includes overseeing the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority which was launched on 1st February.

North Yorkshire Council is reminding all voters to check their polling card to find out where their allocated polling station is, and to remember photo ID which is required in order to vote. North Yorkshire Council’s chief executive, Richard Flinton, will be the combined authority’s returning officer as well as the local returning officer for North Yorkshire for the election. He said: “This will be a landmark for politics in York and North Yorkshire, as the election of the mayor will lead to benefits to hundreds of thousands of people.
