York is set to take part in the City Nature Challenge for the first time.

The challenge is an initiative encouraging people worldwide to find and document wildlife in their cities.

It is set to take place April 26-29. The four-day challenge aims to raise awareness of the biodiversity in and around the city.

It began in 2016 in the USA and has grown into an international event with 450 cities around the world participating last year.

Anyone can join in the free challenge. They need the iNaturalist app to to officially record wildlife data. The app can be used on a phone or computer.

The findings of the challenge help to inform conservation efforts and protect nature in the local area.

Organisations in York will also be holding events to help participants connect further with nature, such as St Nicks, Rowntree Park, The Foss Fairy Trail, and York College. Events will include crafting, bat walks, pond dipping sessions, organised walks, and more.
