A planning application to build five affordable homes in the north of York has been submitted

By Zack Kear

The plan includes five two-bed homes, designed for three people, on Hawthorn Terrace South.

For the development to take place, 18 garages would have to be demolished.

The application has been submitted to the city of York council and states that the demolition would not ‘detract from the original character of the garden city’

Four of these would measure 71 sq m (764 sq ft) and the other would measure 78 sq m (839 sq ft).

The application reads: “The mix has been established by the applicant to meet current housing requirements in the area.

“The proposed use of the land for housing relates well to the surrounding area.

“The site is well‐connected to the wider community through an established provision of direct, maintained, and convenient pedestrian and vehicular routes.”

The application also describes the village of New Earswick as an attractive place for development.

It reads: “Built as a garden village, New Earswick is now largely covered by a conservation area, with most of the early buildings within the village being Grade II listed.

“It was designed at the turn of the last century to provide pleasant homes within a green setting that were artistic in appearance, sanitary, well‐built, and yet within the means of working people."

The City of York Council’s housing executive Coun Michael Pavlovic has previously said that the city’s housing shortage has made York "increasingly unaffordable."

Labour also wants to build 100 per cent affordable housing on council land to help tackle the issue.
