Police have issued a warning after reports of vapes containing spice being supplied to children near York.

North Yorkshire Police is urging parents and carers in the Selby area to keep young people safe from a vape version of the potentially harmful drug.

The warning comes after the force says officers received reports of children as young as 12 being supplied with vapes containing drugs.

The force says Sergeant Jack Waterton, from the Selby Neighbourhood Policing Team, seized 18 bottles of vape liquid from a 17-year-old boy in the town on the evening of Friday, October 6, after acting on the reports.

The substance was sent off for testing and the results confirmed them to be synthetic cannabinoids (spice).

Synthetic cannabinoids are lab made therefore the potency and effects can be a lot greater to anyone using them.

A force spokesperson explained that, as experienced in other parts of the country, the use of spice is associated with severe health problems and can be life-threatening.
