John Askey signs one-year contract extension with York City

York City are delighted to announce that first-team manager John Askey has signed a one-year contract extension with the club.   The experienced manager has committed to an extra year as he looks to build on what has been a successful spell with the Minstermen since he stepped into the role in the November of last year.

The experienced manager has committed to an extra year as he looks to build on what has been a successful spell with the Minstermen since he stepped into the role in the November of last year.

At the time of joining, City sat 11th in National League North, but became the form team in the division after Askey’s appointment and would end the season in fifth, earning them a chance to compete for promotion via the playoffs.

Victories against Chorley and Brackley would see City progress into the playoff final against Boston United where a 2-0 win in front of a packed LNER Community Stadium confirmed promotion to the National League.

2021/22 also saw a run to the semi-final of the FA Trophy, York going further than any other team outside the National League in the competition.

This season, Askey’s side have settled in well to the new division, sitting just two points outside the playoff places after the first seven games. These achievements have earned interest from elsewhere, but the manager has not wavered in his commitment to the club.  

On signing a new deal, Askey said: “I’m really pleased to sign.

“Things have gone well since I’ve come in, it has been an enjoyable time so far. Hopefully I can continue to give the club that bit of stability and we carry on being successful.

“We want to try and build something at this football club, and I hope I’m the right person to do that. That’s why when I got offered the job at Rochdale, I decided to stay.  

“Hopefully it will be exciting times. Since I came in, we’ve obviously been promoted, been to the semi-final of the Trophy, and started this season off reasonably well.  

“We just want to try and keep that going.”

York City chairman Glen Henderson echoed this delight. On securing the manager’s signature, he said: “We are delighted to announce that John has agreed a new contract with York City, preferring to stay with us instead of joining Rochdale in the Football League.

“Everyone has seen the progress that has been made at the club since he arrived, with promotion to the National League and the good start that we have made this year, so we look forward to seeing it continue.

“The fact that he has committed to a longer stay here is evidence of the work that we’re doing to keep progressing the club sustainably.  

“We look forward to creating more memories with John at the helm.”
